Cheltenham Festival in March lends itself well to a market check for horses the bookmakers are running scared off, horses whose odds the bookmakers seek to shorten without necessarily alerting every punter out there.

I showed you last Friday how using a comparitor can alert you to horses whose bookmaker odds are shorter than the Racing Post betting forecast odds.

Here is a race card at time of writing.

Here’s what I like to look for.

The GAP!

Note horses 11 and 6 don’t have any odds movement. There is a ‘gap’. This pattern can often reveal a potential bookmaker liking for the horse.

The 1-2-1 Pattern.

Look out for odds such as 8/1, 7/1, 8/1 patterns ( It can be across the board odds i.e. 8/1 is just used as an example.

I like to shortlist these horses for further investigation.

The Crescendo.

Look out for odds which rise or fall in 5 time.

e.g.. 5/1, 6/1, 7/1, 8/1, 9/1

Or 12/1, 11/1, 10/1, 9/1, 8/1

These can actually be good indicators that the bookmakers fear the horses.

Incidentally, what’s the result of this race? One of the ‘gap’ horses wins at SP of 16.88. Nothing to see here, just a happy coincidence!

14/1 with the bookmakers. If , for example, Sulai Nair was also noted from last week’s market reading comparitor strategy, then the horse may be worth an each-way tickle.

When a race is ‘too busy’, i.e. there are multiple qualifiers, then perhaps its best to be cautious.

Next week we’ll look at the Betfair market , the last of the triumphirate of live market reading strategies.

You’ll be surprised, at Cheltenham Festival, how often horses indicated by these strategies can run well ( or their odds , at least, shorten dramatically in-play).

There are a few long-term profit makers ( one system, the 2 horse race placers, has made a profit every year since 2013 using a secret staking plan . Imagine the accumulated profits if you carry the bank over each year from 2013 to today.

More details will follow. Have a great weekend and we’ll wrap up the Cheltenham Festival live market reading techniques next week.
