Happy New Year from WRWM and a Happy New Year’s Day if you follow these trainers and jockeys.

I had a very enjoyable Christmas . I hope you did too. I even managed to get 18 holes of golf in at L’ancresse Links Course here in Guernsey. I will not be exchanging writing for a PGA tour card just yet.

I want to wish you all a very Happy New Year and what better way to start than with a look at performance of SP favourites on New Year’s Day for the last 10 years.

Is New Year’s Day racing a graveyard for favourites?

Well, historically it’s a good day for favourites. In the last 10 years, backing favourites on this day has turned a 5.52 points profit to Industry SP. This increases markedly to Betfair SP. 26.36 points profit and a return on investment of 4.89%

Can we dig a little deeper?

A focus on handicap races only may lessen the number of qualifiers. 24.84 points profit to Betfair SP and 10.75 points profit to Industry SP.

Here’s one trainer who is not singing Auld Langs Syne until the wee small hours. Nigel Twiston_Davies has had a select 4 horses running on New Year’s Day in the last 10 years. All 4 have won for a 10.05 points profit to Betfair SP and a whopping 251.28% return on investment.

Let’s Twiston again like we did last New Year’s Day? If he has a runner on New Year’s Day, he may be worth following.

Another trainer rarely venturing out New Year’s Day is Sandy Thomson. But he is 3/3 when he does. The winners have all been 5/2 or 11/4.

So, pay attention this New Year’s Day if Nigel Twiston-Davies and Sandy Thomson’s runners are favourites. If the market fancies them, they have tended to win .

Do note, 7 selections between them in 10 years were favourites only. 3 of Nigel’s winners came at Cheltenham.

The jockey/trainer combinations to follow, if on a favourite this New Year’s Day , includes (trainer/jockey)

  • Hobbs/Johnson – 7 runners, 3 winners 8.52 points profit BSP
  • DT Hughes/Cooper – 3 runners, 3 winners when favourite.7.35 points profit BSP
  • Henderson/Geraghty – 10 runners, 5 winners – 5.22 points profit BSP

So, this New Year’s day, focus on favourites only. And if you see the following, consider backing the favourite

  • A Nigel Twiston-Davies trained favourite , particularly at Cheltenham where he is 3/3
  • A Sandy Thomson trained favourite.
  • Favourites ridden by Hobbs/Johnson , DT Hughes/Cooper and Henderson/Geraghty have a good profitable New Year’s Day record.
