It is a big day of flat racing in Ireland on Sunday and I thought I’d take a look at Past Winners for you today.

Sunday 22nd May

13:55 Curragh

This is the Irish 1000 Guineas and is a fillies-only race. I do hope there are no handbag sales around the Curragh area at around 2:00pm.

I do like looking for patterns in these Past Winners. Can you spot any patterns?

No trainer has won two consecutive runnings of this race for the past 10 years. Will J.S. Bolger keep this trend going? Best avoid his Turret Rocks!

A P O’Brien tends to win this race every three years! Did you notice that? Not his year this year then? He does have a number of runners but their jockeys are not declared.

Do note that only one favourite has won in the last six runnings. I would look for a 6/1 to 8/1 horse in this race and back it each way. I do not have the name of the horse yet as the markets are not formed.

14:30 Curragh

This race has been won multiple times by A P O’Brien. Six of his nine winners were favourites. A P O’Brien did not win last year. A return to the winning circle this time?

A P O’Brien has four runners in this race. I do not have the odds. I would back an AP O’Brien horse which is a favourite and back any A P O’Brien horse at odds of 7/1 each way.

The market gets this race right. The winner of this race tends to be at odds of 8/1 or lower. So what I would do here was to look at any horse at odds of 8/1 or lower who is NOT a favourite and back the horse each way.

The Tattersalls Gold Cup is the biggie!  The jockey James Doyle has won the last three runnings of this race. Not this year it seems as James does not have a ride. The biggest odds winner has been at odds of 3/1.

I would look at a 3/1 odds horse in this race and back it each way. The market tends to get this race right.

Good luck if you are playing in Ireland this weekend.

New balls please!

No, my girlfriend has not found my 2016 Kelly Brook calendar… the French Open begins this Sunday.

In May’s issue of What Really Wins Money I wrote an article on how to back the World number one player at odds of evens or higher. If you follow tennis, it is rare that Novak Djokovic can be backed at such odds!

I hope those of you who read that article will put it to the test over the coming few weeks.

I think that Andy Murray, at odds of 5.5, is a cracking bet to win the French Open. He has been a clay court finalist twice and actually beat Novak Djokovic in two sets in the final in Rome.

Kei Nishikori is an improving clay court player and I will back him at odds of 29, as a trade only, to win the French Open. I think he can go far and I hope his odds will reduce below the odds of 29 to allow for a good trade.

Stan Wawrinka is a temperamental player and I will be steering clear of him.

Good luck if you’re playing. The outright winner market is a great market for the major tournaments.
